Day in the Life: Trip to the Production Site

Last week one of my favourite bloggers, Amber, did a Day In the life post. Apparently, they’ve been happening all over the web. How have I missed this? This is one of things that got me in to blogs; back in the day when a lot of bloggers posted 2-3 times a day (usually their meals, a la Kath Eats Real Food, but posted lots of other stuff too).

6 am jump up in surprise; alarm actually woke me from a sound sleep.

6: 01 am brush teeth, do make up, etc, make self presentable.

6:10 try to stuff everything in my bag (over packed for trip as usual) break zipper because pajama pant string is stuck in zipper like so

6:12 attempt to take photo of said zipper. Find out camera has died, did not bring charger. Kick myself. Take phone photo instead:

6:15 am Brew coffee, gather delicious baked good provided by Kathy, owner of Richmond House B&B, where I am staying.

6:20 am Devour this spread (I know 2 whole muffins! I was just super hungry, and they were so good) while reading blogs:

dayinthelife 222

6:45, out the door, only 5 minutes late for once! And only 2 windows need scraping, so I’m not late for work.

7:00 am arrive at work, drop off bag and stuff in office, get ready to make some major Beef Stroganoff. Start by gathering ingredients… 70 KG of beef…

8:00 am beef is “tenderizing” for an hour. 70 kg of beef, some “gravy" and water simmer for an hour. Place 10 loaves of bread on cookie sheets, to be dried out for bread crumbs

8:15 check in with preceptor. Go over yesterday’s work (recipe expansion, costing…), all is well.

9:00 am meat still tenderizing, go and talk to preceptor. Time to enter the freezers.

9:15 am, barely paying attention to ordering we’re doing, it’s so cold in here!

9:30 am meat is ready for onions and mushrooms to be added, and then meat must tenderize further. In go 30 lbs of mushrooms, and 30 lbs of onions. I have splattered myself with lots of beef juice, and smell of cooked meat. ew.

10:00 am help other production cooks with other food that must be made; am helping to stuff Chicken Vegetable Pies, flattening down the inside before crust placed on top.

10:45 am, My wrist actually hurts from pressing down on chicken vegetable filling. Wow, can’t believe people do this 5 days a week, every week. No wonder injuries happen, and proper ergonomics are important.

10:50 am, beef is good to add in Permastarch, a starch to help thicken sauce that will survive high heat, and freezing cold. After adding and stirring, we must allow to cool for 20 minutes before adding sour cream.

11:00 am take a break. Have apple, drink coffee, browse Twitter.

11:20 am come back to find cooks adding in sour cream. Help.

11:50 am begin scooping Beef Stroganoff into pans, 2.5 kg per pan. Apparently will serve 12 portions per pan, who knew?

12:10 pm Beef Stroganoff into freezer, roughly 42 pans made. Told to go on lunch, I think my preceptor has nothing else to tell me.

12:11 pm remove beef stroganoff covered Scrubs shirt. Don’t have an extra pair of pants to change into, so they stay on.

12:35 pm Take temperature. Scribble in my notebook.

1:00 pm Take temperature again.

1:15 pm take temperature one final time. Preceptor says I’m free to go. yay!

1:20 pm start driving back, with a pit stop at Safeway to change into less smelly pants, and pick up some supplies:

(chocolate covered almonds and gum)

3:15 pm arrive home in Kamloops, say hello to Sadie, play on computer, check emails, debate about going swimming, decide to take Sadie for a walk instead.

granola.bars 001

(I like to think she was grateful)

5:45 take a shower, begin on dinner (quinoa, steamed carrots, stir fried kale and leeks in tahini and soy sauce).

6:30 brother calls, and needs a ride home because he missed a bus by two minutes… next bus not for another hour.

7:00 home and eating.

7:15 watch last nights NCIS, which mom has PVRd.

8:20 watch some cupcake wars, try and make myself get up and write this blog post, but Sadie is on my lap and looks so comfortable!

8:55 finally get up and get writing.

As you can see it wasn’t the most productive of days. I often times am doing 2-3 hours of work after a 6 to 8 hour day of work. Today I slacked off, and will pay for it over the next couple days, since I’m planning on heading to Vancouver this weekend for a much needed trip to see my friends.

Alright, I’m off to do some printing and room cleaning. I was reminded by some of the comments on Morgan’s post on controlling stress how much better I feel if I clean up my room before going to sleep.

Know to be True

Some days you just need a little inspiration.

Today it’s grey outside, it’s rainy, but still bright, and I’m in the mood for a little inspiration.

It started with this post, by the lovely Angela. I love her Daily Glow posts, and her love of quotes. I’m a huge quote person. I know they’re corny and cliché  but what can I say? The cliché had to come from somewhere right?

Because I still didn’t feel like studying, I decided to go and check out some Ted Talks, and came across this video.

http://video.ted.com/assets/player/swf/EmbedPlayer.swf

I loved it. There is something about spoken word that is just so… inspiring. It always makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

I loved the idea of three things you know to be true.

Today I know the following three things to be true.

1. It’s grey and gloomy out, but it won’t last forever, spring is right around the corner.

2. I have amazing people in my life; honestly I do, I can’t help but wonder how I can deserve them.

3. I’m not sure what exactly I’m going to do in my life; but I’m not too worried about it, I’ll figure it out someday.

And of course it’s the weekend!

What are three things you know to be true?

Another Monday

I feel like I should write something today.

But I’m not sure what to write about.

How amazing my Sunday was? I spent it biking, baking, grocery store shopping and hanging out with friends.

I fed them cupcakes.

muffin2

Not just any cupcakes. Mama Pea’s cupcakes.

muffin1

That Mama Pea, she knows her baking.

I replace the applesauce and almond butter with banana and peanut butter. But still delicious, and loved by all.

Or maybe about my busy, but normal, Monday. It was pretty mundane really. I started the 6 Week Pipes Challenge, Morgan is an amazing challenge organizer I have to say. I did my day one, week one of the 100 pushups.

Boy am I tired.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll have something more to say, or write.

Kitchen Sink Granola

Well, it’s been a long week.

And it’s only Wednesday. My week has honestly involved a lot of me napping and watching Sex and the City. I know. How can that be a long week? Well, I’m sick, so doing anything is basically out of the question.

granola1

I did however, make granola. And maybe it’s because I was sick when I made it, and basically can’t stop eating it, that I’m still sick. Just a theory.

It was seriously a gorgeous day on Monday. But I ran one errand, and felt too exhausted to do anything. Except make this granola, based on granola we made in class one and a half weeks ago.

granola2

Do you see that sunny day?

It actually looks a lot like that now, and the courtyard outside my window is full of people happily enjoying some vitamin D.

Maybe I’ll join them.

But first I’m going to eat more granola.

granola3

The best part of this granola is how flexible it is, you could through just about anything in. Well, maybe that’s what’s great about any granola right? But just to give you an outline to work with, here is what I did.

Kitchen Sink Granola

Ingredients
1/4cup Honey
1/4cup peanut butter (or nut butter of your choice.)
1 tbsp coconut oil
4 cups large flake oats
3 tbsp ground flaxseed
1/2cup chocolate chips
1/2-1cup raisins
1/2-1cup almonds

1. Preheat oven to 325. (I accidentally had it on 350, and some of my granola is definitely more on the burnt side).
2. Melt honey, oil, and peanut butter in microwave so it can easily be blended together and poured.
3. mix together the oats and ground flaxseed, then pour in the honey and peanut butter mixture. Thoroughly combine until all the oats are coated (there will be a few clumps of granola goodness).
4. Pour mixture onto cookie sheet, and spread into an even layer. Throw in over for 10minutes or so. Remove, toss around a bit, and again put in oven for 10min; repeat another 1 to 2 times, until oats are toasted and fragrant. Allow to cool.
5. Once cool throw the oats into a bowl, and add in remaining ingredients; mix and try not to eat too many while you’re at it.

WARNING this granola is addictive. I’ve already eaten one jar, even if it was the smaller of the two jars, it is still GONE.
granola4

Yep it’s that good. And you could basically use any ingredients you have on hand; almond butter, peanuts, walnuts, apricots, dates, carob chips… Try whatever you like.

Now if you excuse me, I’m going to go and take another nap. All this writing has been exhausting.

A.B.C.

Well, it’s been awhile since I’ve posted a good blog post, lots of homework, projects, assignments, conferences, and fundraising efforts have ruled my life recently.

So I don’t have pictures really, and I’m sort of feeling lazy so I thought I’d do this meme that’s going around the blogosphere, that I find entertaining, especially since I don’t really share a lot about myself…

Age: 23 (my fav number, since it’s my birthday number 🙂 )

Bed size: double. In rez you normally have a single bed, but us RAs are special and get a double bed. It is also the most comfortable rez bed ever (actually just comfortable in general. My mom stayed for a weekend a couple weeks ago and actually mentioned how comfy my bed is).

Chore I hate: laundry. a) I have to go down twelve flights of stairs to do laundry. b) A wash costs $1.20, the dryer is$.60/30min, and you always need to dry twice. and c) folding laundry is a b****.

Dogs: I have had dogs my whole life: Misty (a white 3-legged terrier), Professor (beautiful husky), Corkey (a britney spaniel, and an escape artist), Fawn (a HUGE German Sheppard/malmut cross – she also had one brown eye and one blue eye). Sadly they have all passed away (don’t worry, they all lived to be old dogs!) Also I’m a cat person to be honest, and my cat (Cactus) is back home and I miss her dearly.

Cactus

Essential Start to my day: Coffee + Food. Also opening my blinds and staring out my window at my view…

Favourite colour: tough one! I love so many colours; it has to be the right shade. Probably blue, pink, and green, oh and purple!

Gold or Silver: hmm. I have a beautiful gold necklace, and a beautiful silver necklace. Can this be a tie?

Height: between 5’5” and 5’6” (I say 5’5&3/4”)

Instruments: I played piano for 12 years, and flute for 6 years. I want to learn guitar too.

Job Title: Professional Student. 😀 6 years of University makes me a professional right?

Kids: nope. Not for a long long time.

Live: Vancouer BC, though I’ll be back in Kamloops in the fall for an internship!!!

Mom’s Name: Trish

Nicknames: I never had nicknames until I moved to Vancouver. My nicknames then consisted of: Bron, leBron, Bronze, Bronx. Those are allowed. Do not call me Bronnie or Wynnie, or anything like that… I might just punch you.

Overnight Hospital Stays: none in recent memory. Apparently I was flown to BC children’s when I was a baby because I had a hole in my heart (clearly I do not remember my proper physio terms for this) I’m supposing that included an overnight stay.

Pet Peeve: Um, are we supposed to have just one? Ignorance + arrogance probably really get my goat.

Quote from a movie: I’m leaving this blank, I’m horrible with movie quotes.

Righty or lefty: righty

Siblings:  Younger brother.

Time you wake up: I honestly am always awake before 9, and usually before 8 on a normal day. getting out of bed might take an extra hour though…

Underwear: hahaha, who wrote this thing??? a lot of it is from La Senza, and some from department stores.

Vegetables you don’t like: celery. While most vegetables have grown to earn themselves a sport in my heart I loath celery. blech.

What makes you run late: the internet. And living on campus. You’d think that help, but I swear I’d be more on time if I had to catch a bus to get here…

Yummy food you make: Would it be vain of me to say anything I bake? As long as it has a recipe!

Zoo Animal: Hmmm, a zoo animal I like. I haven’t been to a zoo for awhile, but when I went to the aquarium last year I could have stared at the otters all day! SO CUTE!

Phew, that’s long. Now you know weird and random facts about me. What about you? Pick a letter and share!

Let them eat cake!

It’s clearly been awhile since I blogged, hasn’t it?

What can I say reading week was… busy. And what time wasn’t busy I filled with friends and family.

Oh and cake.

cake1

Oh delicious cake. Over the break I took a cake decorating class, and got a chance to play with fondant a la Ace of Cakes and Cake Boss. Did you know it’s made from the same ingredients as marshmallows? Plus a ton of icing sugar.

The lovely April of April Cakes was our teacher, she had the cutest little kitchen set up in her house for cake making!

cake2

Delicious.

Chocolate with chocolate ganach and vanilla buttercream in between and covered in vanilla buttercream. Be still my heart.

cake3

cake4

Besides eating too much cake I enjoyed a lot of time out in the usually shy sun.

cake5

It spent the weekend outside, making me go out and be outdoorsy. It was great, especially since my mom was here and we were able to get a couple days of walking. Walking, and more walking.

cake6

What have you been up to? What are you looking forward to this week?

I’m looking forward to the weekend, when I’ll (fingers crossed) have some free time. It’s not guaranteed though.

Vegan Challenged

Well. This vegan challenge is off to a rocky start, let me tell you.

Let me put a disclaimer that says I actually ate vegan for Saturday and Sunday, and that was easy peasy. Might have included some polenta of which I got NO decent shots, but came from this cookbook.

CRW_1649_RJ

(Man even that shot is soooooo blurry!)

But well, yesterday there might have been a non-vegan mini muffin that I didn’t think about until I ate it.

And today well, if I was an all or nothing person I’d say today was a complete bust. But at the same time I sort of knew today wouldn’t go so well.

For one of my classes we’re placed with a community partner. Ours happens to be Urban Aboriginal Community Kitchen, and it is a group that gets together every week and makes lunch together. They try to stick to foods that are historically part of their diet. And if you guess fish, you were right.

I don’t even normally eat fish, but these salmon burgers, were amazing. Not that I have any pervious experience to compare it to, but still I imagine they were pretty good.

Sadly, I guess I’m “failing” at this vegan challenge, but I’m still gonna do my best (minus thursday’s class). And hopefully I can get some vegan related posts and recipes up later this week.

I’ve loved reading people’s recaps so far, it’s been cool to see what everyone says. (PS, Leah at Why Deprive mentioned the best dream about cheese in the comments on Life After Bagels)

Accidentally…

On purpose. Sometimes that’s what life feels like.

I wanted to do a little baking the other day. But couldn’t decide what to make. Partly due to the ingredients I had on hand, partly just out of indecision.

So I wander through cyberspace looking at recipes. I wanted chocolate. But I wanted gingerbread. I wanted… something. I found a recipe that looked decent, sounded yummy, that I had the ingredients for, and I started out making it

Somehow that didn’t work and my hands just started adding this, and adding that… And before I knew it, I had something completely different.

IMG_1413

Spiced Dark Chocolate cupcakes with buttercream icing.

IMG_1393

IMG_1394

Oh yum yum. The cake part was great, the icing was ok. It’s not quite perfect, to be honest I don’t even know exactly how much of everything I put in there. But I think if I try it out one more time it’ll be fit for all.

I can’t believe there’s only four more sleeps till Christmas. This time tomorrow I’ll be on a bus going home, I’m pretty excited. Though I definitely have a lengthy to do list here today so my place will survive without me (though to be honest I’m gone all of 9 days, apparently if I left my milk, it will be completely fine upon my return…).

I’m sure the holidays will mean lots of cooking and baking, so hopefully I’ll have lots to post about. Plus my parents have some pretty sweet camera accessories and no lie I’m using them while I’m home.

What are you most excited for in the upcoming holiday week?

Presents

Well it’s official. I’m a liar. Here I was promising you lots of posts while exams happened… and instead I pretty much just disappear. My apologies. I have been out there reading blogs (somewhat, I did take a break when I went to Whistler for three days which was AMAZING.) just not posting any myself.

whistler 039

whistler 060

Yesterday I met up with a dietitian who has a job that is pretty similar to what I’d love to be doing. We just had coffee and chatted and it was fun and gave me lots of food for thought.

I also went Christmas shopping and bought some of my friends their gifts. Can you believe yesterday was the first official day of me Christmas shopping??? Yeah, I know, most people are finishing…

But for some of my friends I did a little DIY project.

IMG_1371

Way back during Angela’s Project Food Blog, she made some Blondies in a Jar. I loved the idea, but know there was no way I’d have enough of all the ingredients (or be able to find big enough jars!) to make that for my friends.

Instead I stuck with Hot Chocolate in a Jar.

IMG_1294

Directions

1. Make Hot Chocolate Mix as you like it (mine is probably 1 cup cocoa powder to 3/4 cup sugar [white & brown} with liberal amounts of cinnamon sprinkled in).

2. Get your jars (mine were $1.50 at the dollar store, then I just cleaned them).

IMG_1299

3. Split evenly, leaving room for marshmellows.

4. Experiment with different wrapping techniques.

IMG_1301

IMG_1309

5. give to friends.

IMG_1365

Overall, they turned out quite well. The cards had little directions for making the best cup of cocoa. And that was that. I often find myself making gifts for people every few years, I love the hands on feel of DIY projects.

Well I’m off to do… NOTHING!!! I love being done exams and school, I have a good ten days of freedom now. Though I do have some Christmas shopping left to do…
