On That Fitness Thing

I realized it’s been ages since I updated you guys on my fitness thing.

I only realized this when I was writing my birthday post last week, and mentioned my sports injury.

I think the last time I even mentioned my lack of running/what I’d been doing was back in… I don’t even know when. Maybe never.

So let me tell you the story, about a year ago in September I began having a heel pain, that led with a sharp stiff pain into the arch of my foot. It wouldn’t be always there, but it would sort of appear 5 minutes into my run, as I was warming up, or sometimes when I was slowing down. Or the pain would happen a few hours after my run, if I’d been sitting and moved my foot, it would feel painful and stiff.

I knew what it was.

But I didn’t want to admit it.

So I went to a doctor who only confirmed what was wrong with my foot: plantar fasciitis. It’s a pretty common running injury, and having seen my mom go through it, I knew that’s what was going on.

According to the doctor it was related to weak hip strength, so my physiotherapy related to that. I did physio for a few months, and then it was “up to me”.

In the winter, spring, and summer, I did a run here or there, but nothing steady.

Then I got home from Kenya, and a friend of mine made me go running with her. It was a simple suggestion she made, “hey we should go running sometime.” One of those suggestions you don’t really think are going to go anywhere. But within a week we were running together. And so I was running 2 x a week.

Still more recently my friend Amber has got me out running on the trails, which has made me want to keep at running.

So now I’m trying to run 3 x a week. Nothing long yet, barely 5km (3miles) but still, steady running. It feels great.

But it’s not just the running, fitness wise, that’s making me feel great.

I’m also doing Hot Yoga, at least 3 times a week. I started in September, and knew I’d like it, but now how much I’d love it. Kamloops Hot Yoga is a great studio, and I love the variety of classes I take.

I’m also doing swimming 2x a week, and I’m up to 3000m when I go, and I spend most of it trying to catch up to my mom. ;)

Finally a year later I’m starting to feel fit again.

PS sorry for lack of pictures, not my normal style, I know.

Let them eat cake!

It’s clearly been awhile since I blogged, hasn’t it?

What can I say reading week was… busy. And what time wasn’t busy I filled with friends and family.

Oh and cake.

cake1

Oh delicious cake. Over the break I took a cake decorating class, and got a chance to play with fondant a la Ace of Cakes and Cake Boss. Did you know it’s made from the same ingredients as marshmallows? Plus a ton of icing sugar.

The lovely April of April Cakes was our teacher, she had the cutest little kitchen set up in her house for cake making!

cake2

Delicious.

Chocolate with chocolate ganach and vanilla buttercream in between and covered in vanilla buttercream. Be still my heart.

cake3

cake4

Besides eating too much cake I enjoyed a lot of time out in the usually shy sun.

cake5

It spent the weekend outside, making me go out and be outdoorsy. It was great, especially since my mom was here and we were able to get a couple days of walking. Walking, and more walking.

cake6

What have you been up to? What are you looking forward to this week?

I’m looking forward to the weekend, when I’ll (fingers crossed) have some free time. It’s not guaranteed though.

The No-Running Diet

Diet is a four letter word. But today I’m not talking food diet, I’m talking exercise diet.

So I run. Not everyday, but consistently. In the spring when I was training for a half-marathon, I was running four days a week. After the half I didn’t feel like running all that much, so I was run free for a good three weeks. Then during the summer I was motivated by a running partner to get out at least twice a  week.

This fall I started to feel good about running again. I was starting to get into the rhythm and enjoy a good run outside, even out in the snow. My mileage was staying between 6 and 10 km, but it felt good.

Then a couple of weeks ago I start to feel a pain in my heel. A pain that would hit at the beginning of runs. Or after my run, or after other activities when I was just sitting.

Shit, I thought. Shit. I had an inkling about what this was. But I put off going to the doctors, because I’m lazy.

But yesterday I got the confirmation I’d been dreading.

Dx: planter fasciitis

Tx: take a break from running.

at least three to four weeks. Wow. Well. I was expecting orthotics, but you know, instead I’m on a running diet

At least I really enjoy doing other activities….right? But the thing is, for the past year or so, my exercise schedule has been done around running. As in I plan my other exercise as cross training to running. But now that’s not my focus, or it can’t be. In fact the doctor kept muttering about how “tight” I am and said that I should work on my flexibility, hip and core strength since those were rather lacking apparently.

So here’s my question blog world, what other exercises do you do besides running? And how do you plan gym workouts and that sort of thing?

21.1

Nope, that’s not my age. It’s the distance I ran today.

The BMO 1/2 MARATHON finally arrived!

Here are some stats according to my garmin:

Total distance: 13.35miles

Total Time: 1:52:56

Avg Pace: 8.27min/mile

Overall? I’m stoked! I knew that my time would be around 1:50 and I’m so glad that it worked out. Especially since I wasn’t feeling optimal these last few days; first exam stress, then tired, then a little cold! It’s been a rough and busy week. So to still do well on this race feels awesome (and a little sore!).

Now I’ve started thinking about what I want to do for the summer… I need a challenge. Any suggestions?

Stormin’ Some Walls!

Wow! Who knew storming walls could be so much fun? Here’s a little recap for you all…

storm the wall!!! 029
Mode of transportation; prerace. I don’t have photos of our beginning, because we checked in at different places! But our swimmer done fairly well I think, and our sprinter was fast.

storm the wall!!! 043

(I’m the one in green black and brown)

I had to do 9 laps of that little greenway thing, it was about 3k. After my 9laps, our long distance runner took to the stage, and met us at the wall!

storm the wall!!! 055

Can you spot us? I’m at the top, pulling up our team mate.

storm the wall!!! 065

Getting our last person over the wall! Woo! So much fun.

We came third all in all, so it was pretty fun. We’ll see if our time is fast enough to get us into the semi finals. 😀

Afterwards I was crazy I did a 14k run with my friend. 😛 I’m pooped, I’m probably gonna go to bed soon (and STUDY HARDCORE tomorrow for a quiz I have…)

Bringing Back…

Some good habits.

Tonight I just had this itch to break this out…

IMG_9887

My Yoga Mat!

Woot. Broke out some yogadownload.
IMG_9895

Unfortunately the pdf file didn’t match up with voice, so I ended being so confused! Oh well, even being that lost I still felt a good stretch. I forgot how good yoga makes your body feel, even if I am as inflexible as a stick.

I’ve also been breaking out my cooking habit:

IMG_9900

IMG_9897  IMG_9899

I marinated some chopped portobello mushroom in balsamic vinegar, olive oil, and mashed basil and garlic. Then before popping in the oven, I snuck in some asparagus too. Bake for 20-30 min at 350 and then served on a bed of brown rice. Delicious.

I’m still a little peckish, so I might go grab a snack… I’m trying to eat better, it’s been all over the place recently!

Anyway I really should do some work… or not. I plan to mostly get organized here, though I could start studying for a quiz I have monday, and an assignment I have due thursday… but those are so far away!

Coconut Oatmeal

I just can’t get enough!

Or rather, I have some coconut milk to get rid of or it’ll just go bad…

So this morning he was the star of my oatmeal:

IMG_9845

Almond butter is a little resentful…

IMG_9842

He needs to get over it!

Into the Pot:
-1/4c coconut milk
-1/3c water
-1/4c oatmeal mixture
-1/2-1med frozen banana
– heaping TBSP raisins

Heat, stir, put into the bowl with a tbsp almond butter…

Exercise

I have been so lazy lately. Well, just compared to normal. I’ve been taking a few extra rest days. I used to feel so guilty if I took extra days off. I’m trying to feel fine with being a little bit lazy; being a student can really suck the energy out of you, and sometimes somethings gotta give.

But I do have an exciting new sports event just around the corner…

storm

STORM THE WALL

This is the biggest intramural sport in North America. Basically it’s a super mini triathlon done relay style with every team member getting over the wall at the end. I missed out on this last year, so it’ll be my first time. I’m super excited!

The events are:
– 200m swim
– sprint run
-“long run” (like 1km)
-bike ride (like 5km)

I’ll either be biking or swimming, since I can do those decently and most people struggle with those events. Have I mentioned I’m EXCITED? So that’s this weekend, so I won’t be doing my scheduled long run, I’ll have to figure something out! Maybe do a shorter run at race pace…

Alright I’ve got some resumes to print out and distribute today, so I’m signing off.

What sort of interesting oatmeal combos have you all been trying lately?

Coco for coconut

This has been a good weekend. I got to see Alice in Wonderland finally! It was decent, but not my favourite Tim Burton or Johnny Depp movie ever.

I did a little shopping (and didn’t over spend).

Watched a LOT of TV. Procrastinated like crazy (this continues..)

Ran 20k!!!! Woot Woot!

And did some baking….

IMG_9809
hmmm, fresh from the oven.

IMG_9811

All iced up and ready to go…

IMG_9831

SOOOO Good. 🙂 Although they had this… tang? or something? I think it’s from baking soda, does that make sense? The recipe (from here) called for some vinegar and I left it out since I didn’t have any. I believe that maybe this might have lessened the tang?

Anyway, they were overall pretty good. I have some left over coconut milk I”ll have to find a use for, but that shouldn’t be hard to do!

Short post I know, but I got to run and maybe do some work. :p

Have a good week!

16k Baby!

IMG_9634

Me: pre run. (you don’t wanna see the post run. 😉 )

I ran further this year. yay!

Stats:

Distance: 16.21km (10.07m)
Time: 1:31:30
Fastest km: 4:47
Slowest km: 6:35

So even though I only added on a little over a kilometer to my mileage my time was a lot slower. I had no pace buddy to really push me! But still, that’s not half bad I say.

After the Run

I broke out a new toy:

IMG_9639

A foam roller. I’ve read a lot about these, and I wanted to see how well it would work. I feel good to by honest. I don’t know if my legs feel better because a) I ran slower or b) I used this. Probably a mixture? It sure felt good to get into those muscles!

Also post race fuel:

IMG_9643

Cinnamon Oats:
-cinnamon, banana, milk, 1/3c oats, raisins, a little sugar and LOTS of chunky peanut butter. So good.

And that’s been my day, time to do some prioritizing and get some stuff done so I can maybe enjoy some Oscars tonight

Fit ‘n’ Fuel

This has been quite the week for me; back to school, two personal bests for two different training runs, and a couple other things I’m rather proud of that have happened. 🙂 Let’s start with some fitness shall we?

Fitness

So this has been my week:

Sunday: 15k (just over 9miles) (1hour22min)
Monday:  5k @ easy 6min/k pace
Tuesday: strength (arms/weights) and 1600m swim
Wednesday: 5k @ 5min/k (25min!!! That’s fast for me, but it felt fine)
Thursday: strength/cardio interval “circuit” training
(I love thursdays at the gym, b/c I go at noon and couple really bad weight loss reality shows Last 10 pounds bootcamp and X-weighted are on, totally keeps me there long)
Friday: 6k at 5:30ish pace (really tough my legs were tired from Thursday!)

Saturday: off
Sunday: 16-17k run

At least that’s the plan, we’ll see how it goes. 🙂

Fuel

IMG_9628 (avocado, hummus + s & p on silverhills bread…hmmmm)

Something I would really like to work on is fueling myself properly. That might sound weird coming from a Food, Nutrition, Health student (and potential dietetics student?) but I definitely haven’t been the epitome of health all the time. This week has been fairly good, up until yesterday, when I definitely indulged my chocolate monster. (blizzards AND mini eggs anyone?)

But mostly I’ve been eating well. Relatively speaking, my eating is good. It’s better then it has been in the past, I’m not trying to diet at all, I just really want to read up on fueling my body to have the best times ever!

Random

Here’s something I’m oddly proud (and sort of shy about too…) of:

http://sh101.ca/ubc.html

Go there, then go to pages 4-5. 😀 I am Student Health 101 Campus Correspondent for UBC. it’s unlike anything I’ve ever done before, but I’m totally enjoying it I have to say. And I hope it keeps going.

Well that’s about it for now. I want to go out and get me some running shoes, so I can break them in before the half-marathon.

So I will see you soon!
